Rajan Eye Care

Full Description

There are nearly 2 million people blinded because of corneal disorder. All of them could gradually and easily be given the gift of sight, provided the eyes of the 1 lakh people who die in an year could be collected to be used in corneal transplantation. Thus corneal blindness can be eradicated in just 10 years. Against the available 2 lakh eyes, only about 30,000 eyes are collected every year from all over India.

Towards combating corneal blindness, Rajan Eye Care established an Eye Bank, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar, known as the ‘Rotary Rajan Eye Bank’. So far, over 4000 corneal transplant surgeries have been successfully performed totally free of cost. If only about 10 pairs of eyes could be collected every day, out of about 100 deaths reported in the city of Chennai alone, corneal blindness in and around Chennai could be eradicated in no time. This Eye Bank is working round the clock and the team reaches the place of the deceased within half an hour of receiving the call to collect the eyes. There is a long waiting list of patients for corneal transplantation. The gap between the demand and supply will keep widening year after year unless eye donation is adopted with a religious zeal.

In order to create awareness about the need and the necessity of donating precious eyes, which are usually either buried or burnt, Rajan Eye Care is observing the Eye Donation Fortnight year after year, by conducting several programmes among school children, college students, and service clubs. The campaign comes to a grand finale with a public rally on the Marina Beach.

Vijay Amritraj, India’s Ace Tennis Star and U.N. Messenger for Peace, impressed by the devotion with which Rajan Eye Care Hospital has taken up the Eye Donation Movement, has proudly associated himself with this noble movement by lending his name as a Brand Ambassador. Another celebrity, Adam Gilchrist, the Gentleman Cricketer from Australia, hearing about the marvelous ‘Vision – Mission’ of Rajan Eye Care has recently joined the bandwagon of Brand Ambassadors of the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank.
