Chennai, South’s first City is one of India’s “Big Fours” with a population of more than 5 millions. It covers an area of 130 Sq. Kms. taking in about 15 Kms of coastline – much of which is a wide, sandy beach, the second largest in the World and about 9 Kms at its widest. Chennai, the “City of Magnificent Distances” is virtually trisected by the Cooum River in the North and Adyar in the South, while the Buckingham Canal runs parallel to the East coast line almost through its length. Greater Chennai of today is no longer the “City alone” and has grown far and wide to embrace Ennore in the North, Tambaram in the South and Avadi in the West. For all its modernity, Chennai retains its fascinating historical past and traditional hospitality of the South.

Chennai metropolitan City, the Capital of Tamilnadu State is the prime destination of industries like Automobiles, Electronics and Information Technology. Chennai City Region, formed on 11.2.2002 covers the whole of Chennai Municipal Corporation, seven districts of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry Union Territory. This Region has Bay of Bengal in the East, the state of Andhra Pradesh in the North, Cuddalore in the South and Salem District in the West as boundaries. It serves an area of about 25548 Sq. KMs and serves a population of about 2.04 crores. There are 2340 Post Offices in the Region out of which 1799 are in rural area and 543 in urban area. These include 18 Head Post Offices, 648 Sub Post Offices, 19 ED Sub Post Offices and 1655 ED Branch Post Offices.

This Region is headed by a Postmaster General, assisted by a Director of Postal Services and a team of other Officers.
